Fundraiser Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do we have to fundraise?

A school’s budget covers the necessities. Our school is blessed with a very active and involved parent community that has successfully helped our council raise funds every year to go beyond the basics and:

  1. support, extend and enrich our children’s curriculum and learning opportunities
  2. develop school and community spirit among students and all staff
  3. promote our children’s faith in God
  4. provide opportunities for our students to apply and enhance their knowledge through STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math activities
  • Explain how this is a “one-time donation”
  • Our children do not canvass family, friends or neighbours for school donations throughout the year
  • The school fundraiser is unrelated to community events such as the Terry Fox Run
  • The suggested donation amount of at least $100 equals less than $0.28 a day for adding technology, excitement and to enhance our children’s learning opportunities! That’s WAY less than what your pay for a cup of coffee or tea at your favourite cafe once a week….
  • Why do parents still have to pay for transportation for school field trips?

Transportation costs for school trips are very high. The school council only subsidizes one trip per class/per year but cannot cover the entire cost. Subsidizing allows teachers to plan more and better trips!

  • What do contributions from Hot Lunch and Milk programs do for our school?

As in previous years, the Hot Lunch and Milk programs not only provide great ways to ensure healthy meals are available to our student, but they also generate funding for Council to put back into our school. This complements our annual fundraiser and goes to all the same goals noted in Question 1 above.

  • Cheques should be payable to whom?

All cheques must be made payable to “York Catholic District School Board” which maintains a separate sub-ledger for our school and tracks council transactions for recording/reporting purposes.  In the Memo section, please put your child’s name, grade and teacher’s name. Every INDIVIDUAL  donation above $25.00 submitted by cheque or online receives a tax receipt.

  • How does the School Council decide who benefits from the raised fund?

The council is here to advise the school administration and staff. We all work together to get input from the teachers, parents, guardians, and students to enhance all of the children’s learning opportunities. Come to our monthly meetings and be a part of the discussion – all are welcome!

  • How can I be more involved in fundraising and other school initiatives?

New ideas are always welcome – feel free to connect with us via the office, attend School Council meetings or join the School Council next year! We always need new faces and more volunteers!

General Budget Information

(supplemental information is available at sjn.ycdsb.ca)

Over the years, many items have been funded by the amazing fundraising efforts of our Catholic School Council and our extremely engaged parent community! As such, these items have become known as ‘Traditional Items’.

New items are added to this list from time to time. For example, specific funding for STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Math) resources or presentations for each teacher and class was added in 2016. Every year your children’s teachers have made more and better use of this funding, resulting in us increasing funds for this, and thus increasing the children’s engagement with these subject areas!

Faith based activities, our French teachers’ tremendous Winter Carnaval, field trips, performers, authors in the school, artists in the school, clubs, music, sports equipment, and so much more also is funded in this way.

Through these efforts, our school has also been able to continuously fund the always growing need for the tools of the 21st century: computers, Smart Boards, a 3D printer, the list goes on. The need for technology only increases every year.

The annual fundraiser alone is not enough to fund these enhancements, so the other school efforts, such as Hot Lunch and the Milk Program, support these goals as well.

This year, we hope the goal we set, and hopefully exceed, will fund all of the traditional items and more. Based on past years we know our parent community will give generously and allow our school to have more funds to spend on key areas of enhancement for our children’s learning! When all funds are accounted for (i.e. from Annual Fundraiser, Hot Lunches, Milk Program etc.) and then all traditional items are fully funded, all remaining funds will be used to supplement Areas of Enhancement outlined in the graph below (i.e. more useful technology for our children). Past councils have approved the following percentages as a guide for the school on how to spend such funds:
